Wheelers Blitz Bakersfield
It was an unusual night for Quad City Steamwheelers QB Tony Zimmerman, the af2s leader in throwing touchdowns. He did something that he does not have the reputation for, Zimmerman ran eight times for 19 yards, four of those going for touchdowns, leading the Steamwheelers back to a .500 record (2-2) in a 37-34 victory over the Bakersfield Blitz (1-3). Zimmerman performance earned him MVP honors for the game.
Zimmerman also set a career and Steamwheelers best with his 14-yard touchdown run. Zimmerman finished the night 15-for-34, throwing for 203 yards. Zimmerman accounted for the Steamwheelers only other touchdown, an eight-yard strike to Jeff Hewitt. Hewitt caught two other passes and totaled 49 yards on the day. Tim Dodge led all receivers with six catches for 99 yards.
The Wheelers looked as if they were going to put the Blitz away when they were clinging to a 37-20 lead early in the fourth quarter after Cory Bern forced a safety on a blocked Jon Baker kick (Bern blocked both of Bakers kick attempts and received the Ironman honor for the game). But the Wheelers offense failed to convert on two straight possessions leaving the door open for the Blitz to make a comeback run.
Shawn Orr temporarily delayed their comeback when he made a huge interception with 11:10 left in the game. That interception combined with three tackles and one pass deflection earned him ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors.
With 6:26 showing on the clock, Steamwheelers kicker Rich Ehmke attempted a 42-yard field goal that was just missed. JSharlo Jones ran the kick all the way back for a touchdown, cutting the Wheelers lead to 37-27. The Blitz then got the ball back with 1:54 left and didnt waste much time in scoring. Chad Elliots pass to Gerrick Bivins with 1:30 brought the Blitz to within three at 37-34.
Elliot finished the game 17-28, 146 yards and three touchdowns. Julia Yearwood rushed three times for 42 yards to lead the Blitz in rushing and Bivins caught nine balls for 89 yards.
The attempted onside kick by Jon Baker failed as Matt Forbes dropped on the flailing football. The Wheelers then attempted to run out the clock, but not without dispute. On what many thought was the games last play, Zimmerman took the snap and tried to run forward as the final horn sounded. After some pushing and shoving, the Wheelers headed to the locker room thinking the game was over, only to be brought back out onto the field by the officials, who claimed that Zimmerman did not make forward progress, which by rule, a game has to end with forward progress or an incomplete pass.
So the teams got back onto the field with 00:01 showing on the clock and Zimmerman took the snap, only this time to run backwards a few yards, then fired the football into the stands, as the final horn sounded.
The Wheelers walked out of Centennial Garden with a victory and improved their record to 2-2, setting up a showdown with fierce rival Peoria Pirates, who come to The MARK of the Quad Cities this Friday night to take on the Wheelers in the Battle of Champions and War on I-74 at 7:30 p.m.
Good tickets are still available at The MARK box office (open normal business hours M-Th and all the way until kickoff on gameday) or can be purchased through TicketMaster at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 563.324.1111.

Wheelers hold on in Bakersfield
QUAD-CITY TIMES STAFF  APRIL 26th

The Quad-City SteamWheelers dominated the third quarter Saturday night against Bakersfield, but they had to sweat out the final minute to come home with a 37-34 victory.

A pair of thir
d-quarter Blitz turnovers led to two Quad-Cities touchdowns, and a safety just before the end of the period to make the score 37-20. But the Wheelers offense stalled in the fourth quarter.

"We just broke down in certain areas offensively," Q-C coach Rich Ingold said on the WOC postgame radio show. "Our pass protection has got to get better."

Bakersfield drew within 37-34 with 1 minute, 13 seconds to go, and Q-Cs Matt Forbes recovered the ensuing onside kick.

The
Wheelers drove to the Bakersfield 2, then called for a timeout, which was whistled at the 4-second mark. Quarterback Tony Zimmerman was tackled after a negligible gain, and the referees had to call both teams back onto the field for another play, a throwaway pass that lifted Q-C to 2-2.

"I want them to enjoy this," coach Rich Ingold said. "This is a hard-fought game."

SteamWheelers kicker Rich Ehmke hit all five of his extra-point attempts, but he missed a 51-yard field goal on the final play of the first half.
